Hi, I am the Martin J. Whitman Professor of Finance at Syracuse University, teaching Value, Control and Distress Investing.
Fernando Diz's Bio:
He is the M.J. Whitman Professor of Finance at the M.J. Whitman School of Management, the Managing Director of The Orange Value Fund, LLC and the director of the Ballentine Investment Institute. Together with Martin J. Whitman, he created the seminar in Distress Investing back in 2002 and as a result of our teaching, he co-wrote the book: “Distress Investing: Principles and Technique”, Wiley 2009, and “Modern Security Analysis: Understanding Wall Street Fundamentals” Wiley 2013. He uses these two books extensively in teaching Value, Control and Distress investing. He is also in the process of writing a book that shows how to apply many of the principles in both books to concrete investing.
He has been mentored and have been a disciple of Martin J. Whitman for the last twenty five years and credits him for educating him in the art/science of Value, Control and Distress investing.
Fernando served as a special consultant to the consultants to UBS Securities (2004-2009) and Bear Stearns (2004) under the Elliot Spitzer’s Global Settlement with Investment Banks in 2003.
He regularly teaches seminars on Value Investing, Control Investing and Distress Investing around the world including in China, India, Thailand, Brazil, Colombia, South Korea and Myanmar. He has published academic articles on derivatives in the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Futures Markets, Journal of Derivatives and other academic and industry journals.
An avid private pilot he has flown his single engine Beechcraft Bonanza solo from Syracuse to Buenos Aires and back, flying over the Caribbean and Pacific oceans and over the Andes mountains. He is also a glider pilot and enjoys Krav Maga training as well a reading philosophy.
He earned his doctorate at Cornell University in 1989.
